For me, you made Greenville Drive baseball “The Perfect Game.” Without you, our audience, there would have been no JDew. Ten years of baseball equalled around forty girls and guys who sung, danced, corralled, motivated, and cheered on the spectators night in and night out. My hand-picked promotional squad will be missed the most of all. The insurance claim from JDew came from my front windshield that was spiderwebbed from a rocket in 2008. I think I was hit by a few here and there, but, there are no major bodily injuries to report. Foul balls are a great keepsake for 10-year old boys who’ve brought their gloves to the game, but, I don’t fit into that group in the least. I’ll tell you right now that I WON'T miss any of these! All of the fans run straight toward these homing missiles, but, the staff, we run away from them as fast as we can. What I remember most, wasn’t the players, but, their friends and family who I was able to meet in the seats: Astros outfielder Josh Reddick’s dad, who never sat down in a chair, the World Series winning Cubs first baseman, Anthony Rizzo’s mom, and her thick Boston accent, but most of all, the state-wide embarrassment from the mouth of “Play Ball” announcer Caite Upton, who, two weeks before her national TV faux paus while Miss SC Teen USA, was on the field with me talking about her grandfather’s time in the mill league baseball circuit in South Carolina. Clay threw a no-hitter for the Red Sox in his second-ever start. Our first big claim-to-fame player was Clay Bucholtz, who was with us in our inaugural season, 2006. But, Greenville has hosted her share of those. No, I’m not just talking about the players who made it to the big league. I especially enjoyed Myron Noodleman (played by the Uncle of Bill Hader), Reggy The Purple Party Dude, and the Zoo!perstars, who you may remember from season 5 of “America’s Got Talent.” One of their characters, Mackerel Jordan, (see what they did there?) took a huge bite out of JDew once, and had all the fans in stitches. Several times each year, we’d invite traveling entertainers to be a part of our entertainment. There’s no better combination than Neil Diamond, JDew, and all the fans yelling “so good, So Good, SO GOOD!” It’s funny to think that the song never got old for us. Any beantown Baseball fan knows what’s coming over the loudspeakers in the middle of the eighth inning. Here’s a picture with “Radio,” who was played by Cuba Gooding, Jr., who said “play ball!” for us a few times.Įvery. Governor, school board officials, recently ousted reality TV contestants, and even the occasional terminally ill child were some of our honored guests. The scouts, business leaders, service men and women, graduating seniors, the Lt. I feel as though I got to meet and talk with everyone in the State. The memories from these are literally endless.īefore each game, friends in the community are always invited to join the players and JDew’s crew on the field to start a baseball game. A 70-game season has over 1100 of them! I filled them with home-run derby, tug-o-war, musical chairs, dance battles, giveaways, races, and the infamous dizzy bat spin. My bread-and-butter were the between inning breaks. Note: I still never eaten a ballpark hotdog! We changed it up between ballpark dogs and ribs throughout the years. Every year, the Greenville Drive held our version of the Independence Day hot dog eating contest everyone watches on ESPN. The contests we constructed were a big part of that. I often told people that my job was to help people who didn’t care for baseball to have the best time possible. Some of the major fun in the minor leagues are the crowd engagement pieces. Right before he announced his bid for the presidency in 2008, McCain came through and we went on-camera to talk about his favorite Southern foods, among other things. I’ve gotten to see several famous big league ballplayers, like Roger Clemens, John Smoltz, and Jim Rice, but, also, folks like Dan Marino, Bubba Watson, Evander Holyfield, and John McCain. Over the course of 10+ years, many celebrities have come to visit. Here’s the pics that I found in the vault. As baseball begins its twelfth season in downtown Greenville this week, I took a trip down memory lane thinking about what I’ll miss most after 10+ years as the “Director of Fun” for the Greenville Drive baseball club. Early pioneers on the Spanish Hustle forefront included dancers from the Latin Symbolics Dance Company, which was founded in the South Bronx in 1972. Prior to the release of the film, “Saturday Night Fever,” the Hustle had many Latin influences and many called it the Spanish Hustle. These sub names were used to describe the different flavors and emphasis of the dance being done until the catchall name of “The Hustle” was adopted. The dance went through many names such as “Disco Swing,” “Rope Hustle,” “Sling Hustle,” “Latin Hustle,” “Street Hustle,” and others. When the movie “Saturday Night Fever” hit the scene in 1977 with a mixture of Latin and Swing dancing done to the new modern disco beat, no one knew what to call this upbeat dance. Some argue that the couple’s dance stole the name “The Hustle” from the already existing line dance. As more people started to participate in this dance, it began to evolve, and a new partner dance was born.Įventually “The Hustle” became the name that coined this social partner dance. The youth would hold a variety of dance contests and would gather to dance together and share new information about the dance. One history suggests that a group of young adults started developing partner dances for the Disco rhythms in the Bronx neighborhoods of New York City out of these popular solo dance moves. Throughout the early 1970s, freestyle solo dancing was popular and seen all over the well-attended discotheques of the time. Originally, the Hustle was known as a line dance with the same name and was danced with groups of people. The word “Hustle” also referred to the dancing of the latest solo movements that dancers would use out on the dance floor. The Hustle went thorough many evolutions and variations during the 1970s. Hustle dancing was born in the 1970s during the boom of the Disco era in the United States. It’s a thrilling dance that is still danced in many Ballroom dancing and social dance communities today. It is a fast, upbeat dance that has many similarities to the swing dancing of the 1930s and 1940s. The Hustle gained popularity and was developed during the “Disco era” of the 1970s. Where Can I Find Downloaded Files on My iPhone/iPad Many stroke centers have been using tenecteplase in routine clinical practice over the last 3 years, so we wanted to find out if tenecteplase is at least as safe and effective as alteplase outside the controlled environment of clinical trials.” “But the latest guidance from the American Heart Association, based on published clinical trials of tenecteplase for stroke, suggests physicians may consider the drug for ischemic stroke. “Right now, tenecteplase is FDA-approved to treat heart attacks,” said Warach, who is also Stroke Director for Ascension Texas and Chair of Ascension’s national Stroke Affinity Group. Warach’s study examined a data registry of tenecteplase use at hospitals in the U.S., Australia and New Zealand and included three years of data through June 2021. Both tenecteplase and alteplase are federally-approved for use in dissolving clots in blocked heart arteries, but the newer drug is already being used by clinicians to treat ischemic strokes. Researchers compared its performance with the standard drug for stroke, alteplase, which is injected over 60 minutes. Tenecteplase is a newer generation medication administered by a single five-second intravenous injection. This can result in a corresponding loss of neurologic function. The vast majority of those strokes (87%) are ischemic strokes, which occur when a vessel supplying blood to the brain is obstructed. Nearly 800,000 people in the United States have a stroke every year. Warach will deliver his findings at the American Stroke Association’s International Stroke Conference next week in New Orleans. Warach, M.D., Ph.D., professor of neurology at Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin. A newer generation clot-busting medication called tenecteplase may dramatically reduce the risk of serious complications from bleeding into the brain after stroke treatment, according to preliminary research by Steven J. There are 23 versions of the legendary El Primero thus far – a record in the world of haute horlogerie. Depending on how often the watch that encases it is worn, it should be professionally serviced at least every five years. But the El Primero is a movement that requires frequent maintenance. A speedy oscillator like the one in the El Primero is less susceptible to disturbances from outside influences, such as gravity or vibrations, so it accordingly keeps time with greater accuracy. Two versions of the El Primero were manufactured right from the start: Caliber 3019 PHC as a chronograph with date display, and Caliber 3019PHF with full calendar and moon-phase display. The El Primero Rainbow with multi- colored elapsed- minutes counter is very popular among collectors. The Breitling team’s Caliber 11 Chronomatic oscillated at a frequency of 19,800 vph. Most calibers in the late ’60s were paced at 21,600 or fewer vibrations per hour. The heart of the El Primero beats at a pace of 36,000 semi-oscillations per hour, i.e., 5 Hz, and enables the chronograph to measure elapsed intervals to the nearest 1/10 of a second. And the balance had a higher frequency than was usual in this era. The power reserve exceeded 48 hours, which was somewhat longer than other contemporary movements. This contributed to the caliber’s highly precise rate. A dry lubricant based on molybdenum sulfate was used for the first time. It measured 13.5 lignes in diameter and was a mere 6.5 mm tall. This movement’s technological victory march was almost impossible to stop. 10, 1969, calling its new watch the “El Primero” (meaning “the first”). But Zenith and its partner Movado had managed to publicly announce the development of an automatic chronograph movement and show a working prototype at a press conference in Geneva on Jan. In Japan, Seiko was working on its own automatic chronograph movement, Caliber 6139, which was introduced to the Japanese market in May 1969. A leading role was played by Breitling, which collaborated with Heuer-Leonidas, Hamilton/Büren and Dubois Dépraz to develop a micro-rotor caliber that was unveiled simultaneously in Geneva, New York, Hong Kong, and Beirut in March 1969. In Switzerland, toward the end of the 1960s, two coalitions of watch manufacturers were hard at work developing the world’s first automatic chronograph movement. But it’s much less common for a watch movement to gain fame and, after more than 50 years, achieve legendary status. It’s not uncommon for a watch to become a classic. In this historical feature from the WatchTime archives, contributor Thomas Gronenthal takes a look at its development. Zenith’s El Primero automatic chronograph caliber - unveiled to the world just over 50 years ago, in 1969 - is regarded as one of the world’s best and most accurate movements.
